Equipment Review: StayblCam Cell phone video Stabilizer

Cell phones are shooting video everywhere-every day. We professionals don’t want to admit it but this little device has become a real working tool in our arsenal. I have had many shoots over the past few years where producers, correspondents, and fellow DP’s have used their cell phone for professional purposes…and I hate to say it but sometimes it looks pretty darn good.  Despite how good the video quality can be there is a common problem: Stability

I saw an ad for a cell phone video stabilizer that caught my eye. It’s called the StayblCam video stabilizer. I asked the company to send me one so I could try it out. I thought this might come in handy when we need to shoot a standup or when we are using the phone as an alternative shot. So they agreed to send me one. I agreed to review it if I liked it…and I like it!

Here’s the company promotional video.

Here is the company website:

StayblCam Video Stabilizer

I tried it out in my back yard and got some decent results with little practice. Here’s a clip.

You can also use this to reach up high above you or scrape the ground. It’s got a lot of uses. It’s not an Osmo or a Stedicam but if you need to use your phone for video recording then you might be glad you had this stabilizer with you.

Utica College “Bold Move” video

Utica College is ushering in a new era for college affordability, reducing the cost of undergraduate tuition and fees by 42 percent to fall below $20,000.

The tuition reset will take effect in Fall 2016 for all new and returning students in the on-campus undergraduate program. The 2016-17 published price of tuition and fees will be $19,996, and when the average room and board of $10,434 is added in, the approximate total cost of attendance will be $30,430 per year. That’s before financial aid.

The College wanted to present the tuition reset announcement in a video that communicated the core principles and motivation behind the move. We approached the task by telling a story that every parent can identify with: Wanting the very best for their child… and facing the day when their little boy or girl grows up and becomes an adult.

Many families are faced with a huge challenge of wondering how they could possibly afford college, especially a private college. Sadly, many young adults and parents don’t even consider a private college because the sticker price is far beyond their ability to afford. Brilliant young adults lose out on wonderful opportunities simply because they cant see any way to manage the cost.

The video demonstrates that Utica College is willing to be a leader in education. This initiative will open doors for many who previously believed attending would be impossible.

TVCREW NY aquires DJI Ronin Stabilizer

TVCREW NY now has the awesome DJI Ronin stabilizer in the tool kit!

ronin

Check out this demo:

The Ronin 3-Axis Brushless Gimbal Stabilizer from DJI is a camera stabilization system designed to give the operator close to the freedom of unencumbered handheld shooting but without the hand-shake. Suitable for most camera types and configurations up to 16 pounds, Ronin uses brushless motors that work on three axes: one for side-to-side “roll” – keeping the horizon level – one for tilt, and one for pan. The system is computer-controlled and boasts a precision of control of ±0.02°. An IMU (inertial measurement movement) detects movement and engages the motors to react, using algorithms to differentiate between intentional movement such as pans and tracking shots from unwanted shake. In addition to handheld shooting, the gimbal can be used in vehicle mounting scenarios and other contexts where vibrations or other abrupt movements would make tripods and rigid camera support systems unsuitable.
